Hello!
We are sharing how member voices ,photos ,actions ,and projects are making a different in our community.
Purpose:
The project aimed to equip young members of the Kisumu Time Hub with practical grafting skills to enhance fruit tree propagation techniques. This initiative, supported by the Rotary Club of Maseno, sought to empower youth with climate-resilient agricultural practices, improve food security, and create green job opportunities in Kisumu County.
What Was Done:
The Rotary Club of Maseno facilitated a hands-on training session on grafting, focusing on high-value fruit trees like avocado and mango. The session took place at a local nursery where experienced grafters demonstrated and supervised the participants in practical grafting activities. Participants learned the science behind grafting, tools required, ideal timing, and aftercare practices. They also received mentorship on how they can scale these skills into viable agribusiness ventures.
Impact on People:
Over 20 youth from the Kisumu Time Hub directly benefited from the training. For many, this was their first exposure to advanced horticultural techniques. The training not only boosted their technical knowledge but also inspired confidence in pursuing agroforestry-based income streams. Some have since begun applying the skills in their communities, supporting smallholder farmers in establishing improved orchards. The project fostered a spirit of community development and environmental stewardship, aligning with Rotary’s areas of focus, especially economic development and environmental sustainability.
" I learned about grafting skills that help reduce the maturity period of fruit trees, which contributes to climate change adaptation and mitigation while enhancing food security
